Vad du kommer att gilla med hemmet

Entire furnished 1BR, 1.5 bath condo in Harbor Lights complex. 25 feet of unobstructed harbor view. High end appliances, 2 smart TVs, fully equipped kitchen, option to rent Honda Ridgeline truck. Towels, beach towels, sunscreen, spices, linens, all the basics included. Please just replenish as necessary. Cleaning Fee $175 to be paid by guests.

Vad du kommer att gilla med grannskapet

Very local, blue collar neighborhood in a 1974 condo complex. Not a tourist area. There is no lanai. If you are a closet racist, this is not the place for you. Most of the residents are of Hawaiian or Pacific Islander descent, and many are from the Marshall Islands. If you're a WWII buff, the Marshall Islands may ring a bell (Bikini Island). If you are caucasian, you will not be the only caucasian, but you will be a minority. Maui in general is very safe, and Harbor Lights condos are safe.

Centrally located on island near restaurants, shopping, mall, Costco, and food trucks. Watch for whales in the winter out the window. Drive the Road to Hana, shop Paia town, visit Haleakala volcano, and surf Charley Young beach in Kihei! It's all nearby.

Övrigt

I can send you my Maui suggestions. There are great restaurants and food trucks nearby. The condo is next door to the University of Hawaii Maui campus, which has a great culinary arts program, so be sure and eat at the cafeteria or make a reservation at Leis Family Class Act Restaurant, where the students practice what they've learned. Also next door to the MACC, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and you can walk to great music performances and art exhibits. My unit isn't particularly well suited for little kids. There are no curtains in the living room and it gets light early. This location is on the other side of the island from the Lahaina fires and life continues (basically) as normal in Kahului.

The property is a short Taxi, Uber or Lyft ride from OGG Maui airport. The parking space is #270. Address is 111 Kahului Beach Road, A426, Kahului HI 96732.

Code to get into the door is ___________

The A Building is parallel to the ocean. 4th Floor.

There is a "quick start guide" on the refrigerator, and written instructions on how to use the TV inside the unit. WiFi is: TP-LINK_C267 Password: 57373188

Instructions for Watching TV & Listening to Music

To watch TV:

1. Turn on receiver and TV with their respective remotes. It takes awhile for them to completely turn on.
2. Using TV remote, select a streaming channel. Netflix and several others are already logged in. Use the profile “Maui Condo” or make a new profile.
3. Sound will eminate from the big speakers. Control the audio volume with the receiver remote, not the TV remote.
4. There will not be basic cable after July 31.

To listen to music, pair your phone/laptop with the receiver:

1. Turn on the receiver. It takes 15 seconds for it to completely turn on.
2. Once it is on, push and hold the Bluetooth button on the receiver remote for 5 seconds.
3. Look for the Denon receiver as a Bluetooth device on your phone/laptop. Click on the icon for the Denon on your phone/laptop to pair.
4. Sound will eminate from the big speakers. Control the audio volume with the receiver remote.

After that, to listen to music via Bluetooth you only have to click the Bluetooth button on the receiver remote (or receiver).

To watch a DVD/blu-ray or listen to a CD:

1. Turn on the TV, the DVD/blu-ray player & the receiver with their respective remotes.
2. Using the receiver remote, push the DVD/blu-ray button.
3. Sound will eminate from the big speakers. Control the audio volume with the receiver remote, not the TV remote.
3. On the TV, the buttons for HDMI2 or Sony DVD player should be prominent. Click one of those. If they are not prominent, click the down arrow to the bottom of the display & click on HDMI2.
4. If you are listening to a CD, you can turn off the TV.

Condo Quick Start Guide

Help yourself to anything in the refrigerator, freezer or liquor cabinet. If you run out of something like toilet paper, please replenish.

Close the windows every time you leave. It often rains unexpectedly.

Prop open the front door (the screen door locks) and open the windows for a great breeze!

Do not turn on the ceiling fan by the TV when the door is open. The fan blades will break off and decapitate you like Odd Job from James Bond.

The door to the main bathroom sticks. Either don’t close it all the way, or if you get stuck, pull up on the handle (rather than down) to get out.

The washer-dryer is a combo unit. The setting to wash AND dry is at about 3:00 if you look at the setting dial. All the other settings are wash only.

Maui has cockroaches. The condo is eco-fumigated every two months, but nothing beats prevention. Keep food garbage in a garbage bag in the freezer or take it out every time you leave the condo and every night before bed. If you leave unsealed food out, assume a cockroach has walked on it. The refrigerator is the safest place to store opened food (they can get into microwaves. I haven’t seen it here, but I have seen it elsewhere). Rinse dishes and put them in the dishwasher. Run the dishwasher often, even if it isn’t full.

You will find fresh linens and towels in the predictable places. If you have any issues don't hesitate to contact me. If you need local help, my neighbor Laurie Demick is my on-site property manager. She lives in unit A302 and her phone number is 916-548-9632.

There's a tight turn around for people coming after you, so please strip the bed and put the sheets in the washer and turn it on before you go. Same with the dishwasher, even if it isn't full. If you can't get to all the laundry, just make sure it's clear what's dirty so there's no confusion for the next guests / housekeeper. Thanks!

Maui Suggestions:

Maui:

SPF clothing and mineral sunscreen (all other kinds illegal). Water shoes (volcanic rocks in the sand)

The sea turtles are endangered and the penalties are steep. Enjoy them, but don’t touch or get near them.

Suggestions:

• Generally, Maui closes by 9 pm so don’t try to adapt to the time change. Just get up at 6 and go to bed early. Trade winds come blowing in the afternoon, making it hard to snorkel, dive, and go on the water, so everything starts early anyway.
• Everyone talks about the sunrise at Halealaka, but the sunset is also great and you can hang around after and star gaze. The park is technically closed at dark but nobody chases you out. No reservations required.
• Everyone also talks about the Road to Hana. To me, Hana itself is the prize. See if you can book a cabin at the state park, or camp. https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/dsp/camping-lodging/maui/ . If you book a cabin, read the permit carefully. I also have a list of tips so just ask.

Food & Restaurants:

• Saigon in Wailuku
• General Store in Hai’ilimaile
• Stopwatch bar Makawao (open until 11 pm)
• Pukalani Superette sells prepared food. Very local. Quite the scene.
• Food trucks by Costco (everyone goes to these, tourists and locals alike). My favorite is Geste Shrimp Truck.
• Order Tin Roof online and pick it up (no inside seating and you don’t want to wait in the heat)
• Foodland has the best poke. The Foodland at 90 Kane Street, Kahului has the best, IMHO). Some people will argue that Tamura’s has better poke, so it’s worth trying both. Not every Tamura’s has poke, so check in advance. Tamura’s is also a liquor store.
• Upcountry Farmers Market Saturday mornings until 11 am in Makawao (one local makes home made Poi, guy has great home made tempeh, vegan bacon is great)
• Tiffany's in Wailuku (get on waiting list online)
• Yee’s Orchard in Kihei (check days & times)
• Costco is the best place to buy leis & Hawai’ian flowers. Times Supermarket in Kihei has nice leis, although they’re expensive.
• Wednesday nights there’s a slack key guitar show at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. No need to pay for the first 4 row seats (twice the price). The second half of the show is better than the first---all the musicians get together and jam. The restaurant at Napili Kai, the Sea House, is very good. The Snorkeling at Kapalua Bay right next door is great. You can make an afternoon of it. www.Slackkeyshow.com
• Avoid traditional supermarkets—very high prices. There’s nothing more local than shopping at Costco on Maui.

A very local scene is cooking out at a grill in a public park, like Ho’okipa on the north shore, partway along the Road to Hana. Ho’okipa is a neat place to hang out because this is where turtles come to sleep (one of the only places on the island) and you can watch people surf and kite surf, or participate yourself.

Plate Lunch (this is a menu item with a variety of luau foods on it). Places to find it:
• Aloha Mix Plate in Lahaina
• Tin Roof (order ahead online) Kahului
• Kaleis Lunchbox

Beaches:
• Swimming: baby beach, turn left at mile marker 5 off Hana Highway
• Kamaole One in Kihei is great for swimming and sunsets
• Snorkel: Ulua, right turn after Andaz hotel entrance. You can just walk in off the beach.
• Kahekili Beach Park, Lahaina (also called Airport Beach)
• Take an excursion to Molokini—best snorkeling and SCUBA diving. Expensive but worth it. My cousin saw a 3 foot lobster there!
• Best shore SCUBA dive is Mala pier—turtles and sharks

Check the daily Snorkel Report online

Best snorkeling:
• Black Rock (This is right by the Sheraton on Kanapa’ali Beach. Parking is difficult, unless you’re staying at a Kanapa’ali hotel, but Kahekili Beach Park is just on the other side of Black Rock)
• Mala pier
• Charley Young Beach

Recommended sites by a reliable snorkel shop:
https://bossfrog.com/maui/snorkel-map/

My cousins (who stayed at my place but who didn’t care about looking like tourists) recommend:
• Hiking-Pipiwai Trail in Hana (bamboo forest was incredible!) Gets more challenging as you go along. I haven’t hiked it but it’s supposed to be spectacular
• -Hui Hui restaurant
• -near Charlie Young beach we loved Coconuts fish tacos and below that restaurant they called "cinnamon roll" place

Massage: Ho’omana Spa in Makawao. Not cheap but very, very good.

Safety:
• Don't turn your back to the ocean
• Sharks love murky water, so stay where the water is clear!
• Sharks love Makena
• Makena is beautiful but if the lifeguards say stay out of the water they are not screwing around. I nearly drowned once because I thought I knew better
• If a rock is wet, this is not a photo op. You'll get washed out into the ocean. Happens all the time to tourists

Black Sand Beach: The only black sand beach I know of is in Hana. You need a reservation to go there. Make reservations as far in advance as possible.
• Reservations for the black sand beach are automatic if you reserve a cabin at the state park where the black sand beach is located: Waiʻānapanapa State Park
• https://camping.ehawaii.gov/camping/spc,details,1684.html Those reservations aren’t easy to get and they book out only 2 months at a time. You might get lucky and someone cancels last minute.
• Hamoa beach is also in Hana, and it’s one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. There’s also a red sand beach.
• Charles Lindberg is buried in a cemetery just past Hana. That’s a great story https://www.hanakaimaui.com/charles-lindbergh-maui/ . James Michener said Hamoa is most the beautiful beach on the planet. I’m inclined to agree.

Luau:
• The best Luau is The Old Lahaina Luau. Make reservations as early as possible. If they’re sold out, ask them if they have a waiting list or try calling back daily to see if someone cancels. It’s expensive == $250 per person, but very authentic and very good.
• Some friends went to a hotel luau that they liked a lot, also. I guess all the luaus are fun but they’re all expensive.

Go with the flow. Just do what you feel like doing. Don’t over-plan. Just enjoy yourself. It’s hard to have a bad time on Maui.

Local Music: There are a million very talented musicians on Maui and most are under-employed playing music at happy hours at restaurants. Ask them if they have other gigs where they really show off their talents. Don’t be fooled—they’re playing “Tiny Bubbles” at a brunch, but they may have won a Grammy for their other work.

Most Wednesday nights there is a slack key guitar show (https://slackkeyshow.com) at the Napili Kai Beach Resort north of Lahaina (the other side of the island). Slack key is traditional Hawai’ian music and it’s very beautiful. You can make a day of it if you want, snorkeling at Kapalua (literally right next door) or Kahekili Beach Park (old airport beach park), and the Sea House Restaurant at the Napili Kai is very good (make reservations) although not cheap.

The first half of the slack key show showcases the featured performers. It’s good, but my favorite is the second half of the show, which is a jam session with all of the musicians in the show, and sometimes musicians from the audience.
