We live in a very special, fully renovated 365-year-old house in Gandria (right on the Swiss-Italian border), one of the 10 most beautiful villages in Switzerland. What makes it so special is the combination of steep mountains, the picturesque Lake of Lugano, Italian language and culture, well preserved architecture, and subtropical vegetation, including palm trees. There are no cars in the historically protected center of our village, which makes it wonderfully quiet and triggers an immediate “de-stressing” effect. Wander through the alleyways and stop for a meal or coffee in one of the local restaurants, visit the richly decorated rococo church dating back to the 1400s, hop aboard the regular boat service for an outing to the upscale town of Lugano, or take a refreshing dip in the clean water of the lake, just a few steps from our house.
Our top floor has a commanding view of the lake and mountains. The long island in the kitchen is the social hub of the house – that’s where we uncork local wines and serve most of our meals. In summer, the sliding doors of the dining room fold up to reveal a full view of the lake. A balcony attached to the comfortable living room is a great spot to watch sea gulls and sailing boats.
The house is large by local standards, with three full bedrooms and bath/showers, including a master bedroom and bath. We have high-speed, wireless Internet access and cable television with a number of English channels. You will find a good bottle of local wine waiting on your arrival.
Your hosts are Richard, a freelance communications consultant, and Nina, who works in development cooperation. Our daughter, Thaïs, is a master's student in Vienna.
We have done home exchanges with families from Amsterdam, Florida, Los Angeles, New York City, and Rhode Island, and our guests always seem enchanted.

Gandria is a charming, old fishing village on the shores of Lake Lugano with just 200 inhabitants featured in the Condé Nast Traveler (9/2007). As there are only very narrow alleys and lots of stairs throughout the village there are no cars, which makes it a very, very quiet place. Our house, which used to be the home and atelier of the Swiss painter Fritz Meijer for three decades, is located right on the church square in the middle – or as people say here in the “nucleo” – of the village. It takes you about 2 minutes to the shore of the lake walking down the steps. The house is one of the bigger private houses in the villages and "towers" over the church square with its three floors.
Gandria is about 3 miles from the city center of Lugano. The car has to be left outside the village (sorry, but everybody does, and that also makes the charm of the place). Nevertheless, you can drive down into the village to unload your things (the distance from the unloading spot to our house is about 60 yards.
There is public transportation by bus or by boat from and to Gandria from Lugano running regularly between 7 am till 7 pm. (On Fridays and Saturdays, there is a late bus back from Lugano to Gandria at 00:15) You can also walk from Gandria to Lugano – it is actually one of the most popular walks in the region as the path winds along the lake. It is known under the names “Sentiero di Gandria” and “Sentiero dell’olivo” .
