To help you prepare for your arrival in your host’s home (and your departure at the end of your stay) we've put together some of the best advice from our team.
And remember: communication is key. Don't hesitate to keep in touch with your host at all times and ask any questions you may have before, during and after your stay.
- Where and when to collect the keys, and where to drop them off when you leave.
- What your host expects of you in terms of housekeeping at the end of your stay and, if applicable, where to find the cleaning products.
- If there are any special instructions for certain appliances in the house (or for pets or plants, if there are any!)
- What to do with sheets or towels before leaving the house.
- Your estimated time of arrival.
- Your estimated time of departure.
to let them know you're nearly there (if they or their friend is going to be there to meet you personally) or let them know that you’ve arrived (if you’re letting yourself into their home).
It's reassuring and more human!
Remember the golden rule of home exchanging: take care of your host’s home as you would like them to take care of yours, and respect any instructions they have given you :)
Whether you're staying for several weeks or just a weekend, immerse yourself in the local culture. Order a dish you've never tried before, stroll down a street that's not on the map, and follow your host’s recommendations...
This may vary depending on what you have agreed with your host beforehand.
- Tidy up the house so that it's in its original condition and clean it (or leave the cleaning fee that you agreed in advance).
- Air the bed and leave sheets and towels as agreed.
- Take out the rubbish.
- Make sure there are no dishes or glasses left to clean.
- If you've noticed a malfunction or accidentally broken something, discuss it with your host.
- If important mail has arrived, don't hesitate to let them know!
Don't forget to let your host know when you're leaving, so that they know that everything has gone well. This also enables your host to come and prepare the house for their next arrivals (if they have any), or simply return to their home :)
HomeExchangers often leave a thankyou note or postcard for their exchange partners, and sometimes even a small token of appreciation such as a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates, or a drawing by the children...
