Wat je fantastisch zult vinden in dit huis
Ours is a beautiful C17th hillside cottage surrounded by gardens, woods and mountain views, in a tiny hamlet in the Apennines between Bologna and Florence. The hamlet is completely untouched by tourism. In many ways life hasn't changed much in these little hillside villages for centuries. Our neighbours grow their own food and raise their own animals (guests are always offered a box of fresh organic vegetables at the start of their stay). In the evenings the village often sits up chatting in the tiny town square (called an "aia" in dialect, meaning the place where the grain is winnowed and people gossip!). Originally, our home was built as a metata (another dialect word meaning the place where chestnuts are dried out and roasted). It is one of the last few remaining metate left in the region.
Inside, the house has chestnut-wood floors and ceilings, the original chestnut staircase, stove and fireplace, antique furniture, and bedrooms with views. It has three bedrooms and sleeps 8. But it is outside when the house really comes into its own. Beautiful gardens, a kitchen garden of herbs, terraced lawns of wild mint, woods, a tree house, a verandah, stone benches with views, sun loungers, and a dining table under the shade of a lime tree. Well what we love is the feeling of isolation without actually being isolated! There nearest restaurants, banks, shops, chemists etc (everything you need) are a 15 minute drive, but once back in the village you could be forgiven for feeling as if you're in the middle of nowhere - just silence and birdsong. What the kids like the most is the wildlife - fire flies which they believed (until they were far too old!) were fairies, deer roaming past the kitchen window, badgers, porcupine, wild boar, even the sound of howling wolves. At night the owls hoot and the bats swoop! During the days the eagles screech! The stars at night are brilliantly bright.

There are lots of wild swimming spots nearby including a river within walking distance which has been dammed to create a lovely swimming spot. A 20-minute drive away is the pretty Roman spa town of Porretta Terme with its shops, bars, restaurants, an openair swimming pool with loungers, music festivals and an excellent weekly food market. Also 20 minutes from the house there is a lake with sailing boats and a small beach and cafe (in the loft there is a SUP which guests are welcome to borrow).
The house is on the Emilia/Tuscany border, 1hr or less from Florence, Bologna, Pistoia, Lucca and Pisa.
