We live historic Doylestown, the heart of Bucks County, PA ( https://www.visitbuckscounty.com ) within walking distance of the Mercer Museum, Fonthill Castle, Mercer Tile Works, Michener Art Gallery and numerous boutiques, restaurants, bars, and a historic (1930) County movie theater. Doylestown is famous for quiet, tree lined streets, fabulous dining and shopping and a superb cultural district (castles, museums and an art gallery.)
It is easy to walk everywhere, and our town is filled with lots of history and gorgeous locale. For those who love nature and hiking, Ringing Rocks National Park (bring your hammers for the great sounds of the rocks) and High Rocks State Park (great climbing too) are within a 30 minute drive. My favorite garden, Chanticleer, is 45 minutes away in Wayne, PA.
We are close to the Delaware River and the historic towns of New Hope, Lambertville, Carversville, Stockton and Washington’s Crossing (between 20-30 minutes driving). Shopping, antiquing, theatre and world class dining abound. The river canals have walking paths that go on for miles on both sides and were used to haul goods upriver using mules and barges in the 1800s.
Our home is a 10 minute walk to the Septa train station (direct to historic Philadelphia.) We are only 45 minutes to Princeton NJ and 90 minutes to New York City by car. Bus service is also available to NYC to and from Doylestown via Transbridge Bus Lines. In 90 minutes you can be at the Atlantic Ocean at the Jersey Shore.
More details:
Six floors of history await you at the Mercer Museum, which features 40,000 artifacts on display from the Industrial Revolution.
A tile maker at heart, Henry Mercer built the The Tileworks next door to his home, Fonthill. Today, it is a "working museum" that produces handmade tiles and mosaics.
The James A Michener Art Gallery offers year round exhibits and is just steps from our home. https://www.michenerartmuseum.org/
Drive up to Ringing Rocks Park, bring a hammer, and listen to these “musical” yet mysterious rocks. Take a hike at Nockamixon State Park or rent a kayak at Lake Galena.
Take a stroll through the open-air Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve and spot tons of native floral species to the area. Or make a stop at Peace Valley Lavender Farm https://peacevalleylavender.com/ and when you are there, don’t forget to stop for doughnuts or stuffed rolls and sandwiches at Tabora Farm & Orchard.
Discover Peddler's Village a historic village with charming colonial-style buildings, award winning gardens and distinctive shopping with 65+ unique stores set on 42 acres of landscaped gardens and brick walkways.
Bowman's Hill Tower https://www.washingtoncrossingpark.org/park/bowmans-hill-tower/ is 125-feet tall and offers an expansive, 14-mile view of the Delaware River area.
Hershey Park, Downey Park and Six Flags are day trips for the fans of amusement parks.
Further afield of Bucks County, for the history buff, you will find Valley Forge National Historical Park https://www.valleyforge.org and Brandywine Battlefield Park http://brandywinebattlefield.org/ which take visitors back to the days of the Revolutionary War.
For the garden enthusiast, the expertly landscaped Chanticleer https://www.chanticleergarden.org/aboutus.html and Longwood Gardens https://longwoodgardens.org/ are delightful themed gardens with bountiful floral displays.

For Sound of Music fans, the Von Trapp family performed at the beautiful Aldie Mansion shortly after escaping Austria and were heard by Doylestown local, Oscar Hammerstein who approached the family and offered to tell their story resulting in the masterpiece movie. The last song Hammerstein wrote before passing away was the gorgeous Edelweiss.
Other distinguished Doylestown residents of the past include James A Michener and the distinguished anthropologist Margaret Mead.
