The house is a small, comfortable, renovated traditional Cretan stone property, which used to shelter livestock. The lower part of the house is built into the rockface and maintains a fairly constant temperature all year round.
The property includes a set of stairs between the upper and lower floors, so there would be limited mobility access between the two spaces. However, if mobility access is an issue there is access from the lane outside the property into the top floor of the house which includes a large outside terrace, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and private terrace accessed through the bedroom.
When it comes to mobility access, unfortunately Crete is hardly a welcoming environment. Wheelchairs for example would struggle to travel more than a few metres before encountering an immovable obstacle.
As far as sleeping accommodation is concerned, the main bedroom on the upper floor has a king size double bed. The bedroom on the lower floor adjacent to an office space, has a double sofa bed.
There are bathrooms on both floors.
As well as the inside living areas, there are three external terraces attached to the house, a small private terrace accessed from the main bedroom, and two larger terraces, one on each floor. These serve as living areas throughout the year as both have protective awnings against the sun in the summer and rain in the winter.
The land that accompanies the house contains mainly olive and fruit trees. There is a more landscaped garden area on the upper terracing close to the house. There is also plenty of outside seating on the land with tables and chairs set out in various positions.

The house and land is in a forested area about half a kilometre outside of the small, quiet traditional Cretan village of Vafes, which sits in the lower foothills of the White Mountains.
There is very little traffic along the lane outside the house. Mainly the occasional local farmer tending to the sheep, or managing the olive and carob trees.
The village of Vafes has a couple of small taverna’s and a gift shop. The larger village of Vrisses is a 10 minute drive and has supermarkets, petrol station, bus station, post office and numerous cafes and taverna’s. The main arterial road that runs along the entire northern coast of Crete can be accessed at Vrisses.
Wider afield there are beaches 15 minutes drive away along the Cretan northern coast. The quieter, rugged southern coast is a 50 minutes drive. Lake Kournas, the only natural lake on the island is 15 minutes away. Chania (with it’s airport and ferry terminals) and Rethymno, both attractive cities with extensive cultural histories are 30 minutes away, albeit in different directions. Crete is abundant with Minoan, Venetian, Roman and Turkish historical sites. Aptera is one such site, 20 minutes away.
Crete is also awash with Byzantine era chapels, often featuring incredible wall frescoes and icons. Indeed a chapel from the first and second Byzantine eras is a 15 minute walk away. There are also many other notable Byzantine chapels nearby or within an hour or so’s drive. I’m especially fond of the village of Kandanos which has a dozen Byzantine chapels all within 2kms of the village.

When I bought the house seven years ago, there was already a cat here. He’s an outside cat. Very friendly and affectionate. He stays outside but gets fed morning and evening.
I have a four wheel drive Ford Maverick and a Yamaha XMax 300 scooter. Having a vehicle is essential living in a quiet remote location like mine. With so many beaches nearby, you might also enjoy using the double kayak which can easily be transported on the car roof rack.
I am only interested in reciprocal exchanges. Nothing else.
