Hva kommer du til å elske i dette hjemmet
We’re so glad you’re here. Please enjoy stepping back in time as you relax at our charming oasis in the heart of historic Indianapolis.
Construction of the home began in 1915 at the behest of Mr. Edward D. Evans, president of Evans Milling Co. Evans went to Earlham College and graduated with a B.S. in 1887. While at college, Evans met the love of his life, a Ms. Harriet Barrett who also attended Earlham and graduated in 1888. Mr and Mrs Evans lived in the home with their chauffeurs, first Jas, and then Mr Tyler Geist.
The garage is original to the home, and on an arial-view map from 1915, the garage is labeled “auto.” This was just over a decade after the Ford Model T was introduced in 1908, which made cars more widely available, and before the the mass diffusion of cars in the American marketplace in the 1920s.This means the Evans’ family was an early adopter of a technology that would forever transform the landscape of American social and cultural life.
The architect of 3434 Washington Blvd was a man named Lee Burns. After serving as a private in the Spanish-American War, Burns studied architecture at Butler University. He left before finishing his degree to found an architecture design firm, called Burns Realty Company, which specialized in the design of fine homes.
Here are photos of the home in 1915, shortly after it was built.
Burns understood that one didn’t need a classroom or a school in order for one to gain an education or to create and do beautiful things in the world! Burns went on to design a number of stately homes in Indianapolis. In fact, he won an award for the William R. Teel House on 56th and Washington Blvd, just twenty blocks up the street from here. He was also a primary architect in the design of the Indiana University Bloomington campus. And a history lover himself, he was also on the executive committee of the Indiana Historical Society.
The Evans lived at 3434 Washington Blvd until 1930. After that, it was a Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity house as well as a transcendental meditation center before it was purchased as a private home in the 1990s. It was also owned for a time by Indiana Landmarks.
The prior owner of the house told us that the fraternity had left a tasteful and robust design aesthetic—characterized by shag carpet, rainbows painted on the doors, and avocado green bathrooms. There was even a hot tub in the sun room!
It became our home in April of 2022. We are thankful for the privilege of stewarding this home, honoring its history, and sharing it with our community and people like you.
Thank you for staying with us and enjoying our little corner of Indianapolis’ rich history. We hope you have a wonderful stay and that you’ll come with us again soon!
