Hva kommer du til å elske i dette hjemmet

Tranquility! Views! Birds! We fell in love with this house the first time we visited, and have since we bought it made it even more special; it's a B&B. With a glorious view, gardens, and our own orange, lemon, lime, grapefruit, carambola (starfruit), cas, mango, papaya, banana, plantain, tree spinach, and breadfruit trees, it's also a place where you can be largely self-sufficient. We grow many vegetables and herbs as well. We share some of this bounty with a wide variety of birds, including Montezuma oropendolas, motmots, parrots, gray-cowled wood rails, barred antshrikes, and several types of toucans. And some mischievous pizotes (aka coatimundis), who usually wait 'til we're just about to harvest the yuca and sweet potatoes, then call all their relatives to descend upon them and devour them in a couple days' time. :-(

There is a stocked full outdoor kitchen with gas oven/stove, sink, and full refrigerator. The main house has a spectacular new cedro (wood) and granite main kitchen with wall oven, induction stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, and just about every appliance or gizmo that two gourmet vegan/vegetarian chefs desire.

In the large "great room" there's a wonderful recently re-covered 9-foot pool table with all new rails, a dining area, a music area, and two sitting areas, one with a large-screen TV. Off the huge great room is a guest half-bathroom.

Each of the two guest suites has a view, a private entrance, and its own bathroom; one has a soaking tub. Both have a mini-kitchen with refrigerator, induction cooking ring, microwave oven, cookware, dining ware, and a seating area. One has a small patio; the other has a short walk to a private covered seating area in a prime bird-watching space. There's also a beautiful outdoor shower.

We are a multiple-chemical-sensitivity (MCS) household, so we've been careful to use no-VOC materials whenever possible when we have done major home improvements, as we have recently. Any solvents and adhesives that were low- or no-VOC will have off-gassed by the time you arrive. Our shampoos, cleaning supplies, etc., are scent-free as much as possible (it's been more a challenge since the beginning of the pandemic). All our food is grown organically, without chemicals.

Hva du vil elske med dette nabolaget

We're situated in a private location a 5-minute drive from the local village, where there are two greengrocers, a small grocery, and a pulperia (known in New York City as a bodega, in other places as a convenience store), a Catholic church, a butcher, two sodas (family-run "diners" in the USA), and two bars. There's a privacy gate shared with 5 other families, but we can barely see our nearest neighbors.

Our "big" town, Santiago de Puriscal, is 12 minutes away. Both the village and the town have no corporate-owned businesses. Everything is locally owned. This is NOT a touristy place!

We are 75 minutes from the nearest Pacific beach, 90 from several others, all of which we recommend. We are about 1 hour from the capital city of San José and about 1 hour from San José's Juan Santamaria International Airport. There are many wonderful day trips you can take from here, including coffee and chocolate farms, wildlife rescue centers, a fantastic botanical garden, a cigar factory, hiking trails, waterfalls, a river, and more.

The privacy gate is run by your phone or, when you're driving or walking, by a remote-control fob. Our two nearest neighbors are good people. One couple is Canadian and English-speaking. The other couple is Costa Rican, but the man speaks fluent English as well as Spanish. Either couple will be glad to help you out with info or directions or other needs. Most of the other neighbors are Costa Ricans, and you may want to meet them and practice your Spanish. Generally, Costa Ricans in our area do not speak much English. But they are friendly.

Walking here is a delight for those who are fit. It's not great for anyone with mobility issues, as we're on a mountain and most of the roads have big inclines. This is where Olympic-level bicyclists come to train, so that gives you an idea.

Annet

The house is definitely *not* suited for toddlers and very young children (babies are okay before they start crawling and walking); it's *not* child-proof indoors, and the property is very steep. You need to be sure-footed if you want to walk up and down the steep hills here and in the surrounding area. Although all the rooms are wheelchair accessible, and the pathway into the house and the outdoor living room are, getting around outdoors isn't easy for the mobility-impaired.

If you're here during dry season (November-May), we will need you to water the gardens once or twice daily, which will not be hard as we have faucets with hoses situated around the property.

And you will need to watch over and spoil our two adorable, lovable cats, if we're unable to take them with us. They are indoor cats only, so, yes: litter boxes. We also have a resident iguana, Clarisa, who would eat our arugula, bok choy, and salad greens if we didn't give her a banana every day. Interacting with a species we formerly thought of as not very bright has changed our perceptions quite a bit. Clarisa (who could actually be more properly named Clarence, we have no idea) has been modifying her behavior in response to some "training" we've given her. It's really fun to commune with her when she feels like it.

Three Costa Rican friends, all extremely honest, capable, and friendly, will work here during your stay: a horticulturist, a jack-of-all/engineer, and a cleaning specialist. They will be here weekly on Mondays, and the gardener comes biweekly on Wednesdays as well. All three are trusted family members; we will pay them directly but ask you to pay US$30/week, half the cleaning fee, during your stay, unless there's a direct reciprocity. Should you require more cleaning help, you can negotiate that yourselves, but we expect you to keep our beautiful home clean and tidy, as we would yours.

Because we are a B&B throughout the year, if you would just like to visit for a vacation, you can find info at casalunafeliz.com.
