Hi all, we realise we need a new approach to Home Exchange in 2023. We already have a lot of guest points and so are not interested in accumulating more. We are only interested in reciprocal swaps, not necessarily at the same time, for stays in city locations in Europe. If you are interested in staying with us, please make proposals on this basis, as it is impossible to keep up with communications regarding all the other requests we are getting. Thank you so much!

This house is a period limestone cottage dating to 1904. It now has more than 120 sq m of space, including very large games room and outhouse converted into an extra sitting room. We have restored and extended it to make it loveable again after years of dereliction. A particular attraction is the marble fireplaces, which are quite unique in artisanship and constuction. A new polished granite countertop has been added in the kitchen. The house is in a rural area, but on a main route into the town of Carrick-on-Shannon, a tourist attraction and main gateway into the west of Ireland. There is plenty of space around the house, including lawn area, and ample gated-off parking. A large area has been given over for tree planting and wildflowers. It is possible to pick berries behind the house - blackcurrants, blackberries, gooseberries, raspberries, depending on the time of year, summer being optimum.

Situated on a country road, there is a lovely old pub called Anderson's Thatch just a short walk away. Carrick-on-Shannon, which has many amenities, is just more than two miles away. The area is famed for its fishing (See listed photo of one of our guests with an excellent pike, which was immediately returned, none the worse for wear, to the lake water), river cruising and hiking possibilities, and has plenty to boast of in terms of archaeological and historical heritage. A quick search online will give would-be holidaymakers in this area a fantastic idea of all there is to do, whether with children or no, within a very short drive of the house. Good examples are Lough Key Forest Park outside Boyle, Boyle Abbey, Doon Shore beach area on Lough Key, Carrick marina, Shannon Adventure Centre near Rooskey, Arigna Mines, Lough Allen, etc. It is worth pointing out that visitors will most likely need a car, whether rented or otherwise, as the house is in a rural area. There are also taxi services available.

The house features a separate outhouse converted into a sitting room, which allows for easier dining outside, or usage as a spot for socialising in the evening if children are being put to bed inside. There is also a large separate games room with table tennis set up. This part of the property is in fact an older, separate stone house. For visitors from Ireland, it is always helpful if you can bring your own bedclothes and towels/teatowels, as otherwise a person generally has to be paid to launder them. Another feature is that the house in the colder months is heated with a solid fuel stove, linked to radiators. We supply some seasoned hardwood timber, and this system works very well. It means keeping the fire going when needed in October, for instance, or for the months of spring, if undertaking an exchange then.
We are sorry but we are generally not keen on very short stays, because the house has to be checked over carefully for the next guests and it is not worth the gain in guest points. For this reason, five nights or longer is what we consider optimal. For shorter stays, a cleaning fee will likely have to be negotiated. In the summer months, we will not do stays of less than seven nights.
