Što će Vam se svidjeti u ovom susjedstvu

In the beginning, Kazimierz District was an independent town near Cracow. It was founded by king Casimir III the Great in the 14th century on an island between the main Vistula river bed and one of its arms, now gone. Since 14th century, as a result of the conflict concerning the right to trade in Cracow market square, by the decision of the king, Cracow Jews had been domiciled there and eventually they dominated the town completely. Kazimierz became an important centre of Jewish culture in Poland and in the world and its residents gave it a unique character. Wolnica square was the town centre and Szeroka street became the market square. There are a few synagogues there, such as the Old Synagogue, Remuh, the High Synagogue, as well as Jewish cemeteries. The Corpus Christi Church towering above the district can rival the St. Mary’s Church, the “Skałka” Church is known for the death of Bishop Stanislaw, patron of Poland and a martyr, murdered by king Bolesław. In the catacombs beneath the church, there are tombs of many Polish poets and writers.
After the war, Kazimierz was a dangerous district, full of ruins and abandoned houses. Since the fall of the communism, it has been coming back to life gradually.
On the next street Szeroka, film lovers will recognize the place of liquidation of the ghetto from one of the scenes in Steven Spielberg’s “Schindler’s List”. Those events were also witnessed by young Roman Polański, who later became a famous director (The Pianist, Chinatown, Rosemary’s Baby).
On this street also was born Helena Rubinstein, creator worldwide cosmetics brand and one of the richest women in the world.
Today, Kazimierz is a trendy district full of pubs, restaurants and cafes visited by both tourists and locals.
During the German occupation, the residents of the district were transported to concentration camps, the remaining 17 thousand left after the deportations were forcibly moved to the ghetto on the other side of the Vistula River, the Podgórze district. The whole process was supervised by the German Governor Hans Frank (†1946, sentenced in Nuremberg), who lived in the Wawel Royal Castle, and was assisted by Amon Goeth from Vienna (†1946, sentenced in Cracow) the commandant of the Kraków-Płaszów concentration camp.
Dajwór street was initially a road running along Kazimierz walls to the suburban farm on the bank of the Vistula river. In 1640, the farm was leased by Marcin Dajwór and the local residents named the Road the „Dajwór Road”, which eventually became Dajwór street. The only remaining part of the old Kazimierz town walls on Dajwór street is the stone wall of the Old Synagogue. In the 19th century, city authorities changed the name of the street into Wałowa street, however, the residents kept calling it the old name and so it stuck. In the street, there is a tramway track leading to an old tramway depot, currently housing the Museum of Municipal Engineering.
The tenant house was built in the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. It was owned by Abraham Stoger. Stoger was lost during the war. In 1957, the Polish court declared him dead and before that, the building was nationalized by the government of the People’s Republic of Poland. Initially, the house was three-storeyed, the fourth floor was build after World War II. After Republic of Poland regained independence in 1989, the house was returned to its successors from Israel. They sold it and the buyer did a thorough renovation of the building, designed and rebuilt some of the apartments anew, then sold them to individual buyers.
The apartment was bought by a Spanish man from Madrid, an employee of the Spanish embassy in Cracow. When he was delegated to the embassy in New York, the house was sold again, this time it was bought by me.
