Description

Stephen & Denise has described his/her home in English.

What you will love about this home

Our home is comfortable and family friendly. Pets welcome. We have a cat if you'd like to play with one, but if you'd prefer to bring your own cat or dog or enjoy a pet free space, we can send our kitty to vacation with our grandkids across the street. Just let us know your preference.

We are also open to hospitality stays for reduced points. Just ask.

What you will love about this neighborhood

Come visit Winston-Salem – tobacco and underwear capital of North Carolina. Known for the largest American underwear producer, you can visit Hanes Park, Hanes Mall, Hanes Village, as well as the Hanes Outlet. Outside of inner-wear, Winston-Salem has a rich history in tobacco, art, and Moravian settlements.
Some of the attractions right in town are:

REYNOLDA HOUSE –Gilded Age home with stunning gardens. Huge pipe organ, bowling alley, shooting range and bar in the basement, elaborate period furniture, and art works scattered throughout as well as a modern art gallery attached.

OLD SALEM – Like Colonial Williamsburg except Moravian Settlers instead of Colonists. Very engaging living history museum with over a dozen buildings.

CITY POOLS -- Winston-Salem has 7 city pools with facilities ranging from diving platforms and spraygrounds to lazy river rides, plus another 7 public parks with splashpads. Most splash pads are free and pool admission is only $3 for adults and $2 for under 18s. Bolton Pool (15 minutes away) has diving boards (even a high dive and 30 foot diving platform) for older kids and a sprayground for the littles. Winston Waterworks (20 minutes) offers a lazy river ride as well.

KALEIDIUM SCIENCE CENTER—Totally renovated and reopened in Jan 2024. ASTC member.

SOUTHEASTERN CENTER FOR CONTEMPORARY ART (SECCA) – Free modern art gallery with outstanding exhibitions.

BETHABARA HISTORY PARK – Another historical Moravian settlement. Frequently hosts events.

THE TOBACCO BEETLES – Being renamed from THE DASH this summer, this pesky pests are the local Minor League baseball team. Cheap food and beer. Very entertaining.

Easy day trips:

Mount Airey – 35 minutes. Basis of the fictional town of Mayberry in the Andy Griffith show. Lots of Andy Griffith exhibits and memorabilia. Hiking at nearby Pilot Mountain.

Greensboro, NC – 45 minutes. Home of the lunch counter protests and the Civil Rights Museum. Greensboro also has a science center with aquarium, an excellent hands-on history museum, and Guildford Courthouse National Military Park.

Hanging Rock State Park – 45 minutes. Hiking, lake swimming, waterfalls. We love swimming in the Lower Cascades fall.

Moratock Park – 45 minutes. River swimming with Tom Sawyer style rope swings. Tubing available on the Dan River.

Ashboro – 1 hour. Not to be confused with Asheville. Ashboro holds the North Carolina Zoo. Largest zoo (in area) in the US.

Charlotte – 1.5 hours. Home to Carowinds Amusement park and Nascar Hall of Fame. Throw in the Billy Graham Library and Mint Museum (art and history) and there’s really something for everyone.

Durham – 1.5 hours. Top rate art and science museums. Lemur facility at Duke University. Great food options in Research Triangle.

Raleigh – 2 hours. Lots of free state museums. The art museum is especially nice and less than 10 minutes from our favorite dive BBQ – Ole Time Barbecue. Go for the brisket, fried okra, collards, hush puppies and sweet tea – but be advised they should probably come with a side order of insulin and Lipitor…

Roanoke (VA) – 2.25 hours. Home to Roanoke Star, Taubman Museum of Art, multiple children’s and science museum, great restaurant options, and the Mill Mountain Zoo.

Asheville – 2.5 hours. Best known for quirky local artists and the massive Biltmore Estate.

If you’re looking for a stop over on your way somewhere else, we’re 3.5 hours from the Blue Ridge Parkway, and around 4 hours to the beach at Wilmington.

Additional information

Outside of the standard smart TV, we have an X-box, full-size ping pong table, basketball hoop, multiple hammocks, a covered glider swing in the yard, a nice grill and a wide selection of 11- and 18-inch dolls with BAGS of clothing and accessories. If you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll find we have multiple options for sitting or eating outdoors – chairs on the front porch, a patio table with umbrella on the back patio, and a second patio set on the screened in porch. The street ends in a cul de sac so traffic is minimal.

About pets... When we are NOT traveling, we have one small cat. When we travel, the cat vacations at our daughter's home across the street. So this is not a problem if you wish to bring your own cat or dog. We vacuum very well once the cat leaves for her holiday, so allergens should not be an issue unless you are severely allergic (in which case you probably should pass on homes that allow pets to visit anyway...)
