What you will love about this home
The house is about 2.000 square feet (170m2) and contains 6 rooms: 2 on the ground floor - plus the kitchen - with 3 bedrooms on the first floor - plus the bathroom - and 1 bedroom on the top floor. The full bathroom is on the first floor, and has a bath tub and a separate shower. Toilets can be found on the first two floors. The library and the living room are downstairs, as is the kitchen, which has a view to the small and private garden (40m2 / 430 ft).
There is a bike shed with 2 bikes (one of them is a carrier bike - for children or for shopping purposes). The right part of the shed is a small playing area for the children (since the roof is glass, it can be hot when sunny). In the shed there's a hammock, that can be placed in the courtyard.

What you will love about this neighborhood
The house we live in lies in a quiet part of the old city of Hoorn, less than 30 miles by car from Amsterdam and The Zaanse Schans. The name of the street (Gedempte Appelhaven) refers to the so called apple harbour, that was dug there in 1420, and was filled in again in 1759. The house is located along a smaller secondary harbor in the town center, which is in direct connection with the IJsselmeer lake, popular among bikers, sailers and (kite) surfers. Our neighbours across the street live in lovely floating barge houses. Our house was built in 1979, when two old fisherman's houses were torn down. It is relatively young compared with the old houses (a lot of them date back to the 17th century) that form the majority in the neighbourhood. Hoorn was part of the 17th century VOC (Dutch East India Company), the world's first multinational, and came to prosperity through its trading activities. Many of the 369 monuments in Hoorn were built in that period.
There is a small playground on our street for young children. Also nearby - with the entrance less than 100 meters from our house - is the Julianapark, where you can walk, run a mile or two, have a picnic, play soccer, practice your skateboard-skills or swim in the IJsselmeer lake.
The neighbourhood has a fine athmosphere, where tourists also like to walk. Most of them pass our house as their guides and guidebooks lead them to the 17th century 'Bossu houses', nearby to our house, which are named after the Spanish admiral Bossu - who was taken into captivity in 1573 during the "eighty-years war". The shopping area is close by (5 minute walk), as are most restaurants and pubs. Hoorn also has a few museums and a theater.
For those who prefer forests, dunes and the sea above the IJsselmeer lake: the North Sea, with the beach resorts of Bergen aan Zee and Egmond, is about 25 miles from Hoorn. The nearest 18 holes golf course is less than 5 miles from our house, in Westwoud. Long-distance walks that pass Hoorn are LAW 8 (Zuiderzeeroute) and the Omringdijk Wandelroute.
Although in the province of North-Holland, where Hoorn is situated, Amsterdam stands out for its cultural attractions, other locations have a lot to offer. The Zaanse Schans and Marken are popular with tourists with their characteristic wooden houses, while nearby Volendam is well known for its charming old fishing boats and traditional clothing still worn by some residents. Another very interesting option is a trip to the island of Texel, where the port of Den Helder is the starting point, 33 miles from Hoorn, either by car or by public transport (train). The province of Friesland includes several more islands, connected with the mainland by ferries, while a few of them –with guidance – can be reached by foot, during periods of low water, which allow you to walk and wade along the watershed! The Frisian harbour of Harlingen is not more than one hour by car from our house.
Famous people who were born or lived in Hoorn include Jan Pieterszoon Coen (Governor-General of the Dutch East Indies), Miep Gies (helped to hide Anne Frank) and Frank de Boer (footballer and since 2011 head coach at Ajax).
Twin cities of Hoorn: Beersel, Belgium (since 1979); Malacca Town, Malaysia (since 1989); Příbram, Czech Rep. (since 1992).

We like our house because it's location nearby the harbor. As there are always tourists walking, it feels like holiday every day.
