What you will love about this home
We don't swap our house in the summer. But we recommend visiting Maine and New England in the autumn when the colors are wonderful and the apples are ripe.
The house sits on an oak covered bluff 40 feet up off the Androscoggin River. Looking north (downriver) you can see the mouth of Merrymeeting Bay - a large inland bay fed by five rivers. Directly across the river from the house is Mustard Island - owned by the State of Maine and undeveloped. Except for our neighbor's house across the pond (screened by a grove of pine trees) our house sits isolated on five lush green acres - quiet except for the chatter of birds.
There are two very good size bedrooms one the main floor - one two twin beds, the other with a king size bed. In the basement, we have a sleeping area with a queen size bed. We have fully equipped modernized kitchen and attached garage. The dining and living areas have large windows that look out on the river. A 42inch LCD TV with cable. Wireless Internet access. No telephone - we have excellent mobile phone service.
There is a small pond stocked with "shiners". It abounds with frogs and turtles. We also have an orchard of 20+ trees - just a hobby orchard that came with the house.
We have excellent access to the river by way of our dock. You can enjoy boating, fishing and swimming.
We bought this 1960's ranch in 2007 and promptly started adding on. Since the house sits on "resource protected" designated land, we were limited in how much square footage we could add. So we chose to add a garage ( a necessity here in Maine ) and a new entry. Our end goal is to create a one-floor living space. The first task was to replace all the windows and doors, replace the siding and put on a new roof. Since that was done, the bathroom has undergone a significant re-do. The kitchen is done now with new appliances, counter, flooring walls - just about everything. The washer/dryer has been moved upstairs and occupies a space adjacent to the kitchen.
Our new sleeping space is in the basement. There is also a new large beautiful bathroom there with a double shower.
We do have some baby equipment - portacrib, bath, stroller, infant seat, high chairs - things like that. And two swings hanging from an apple tree.
We have a 2008 Toyota Rav-4 that can be considered in the exchange.
If you are "college" shopping - Bowdoin, Bates or Colby - we are well placed to make that a more enjoyable task.

What you will love about this neighborhood
Topsham and Brunswick are located about 30 minutes drive north of Portland - easy access off of I-295. Coastal Route 1 goes through the area giving access to Mid-Coast and Downeast Maine. Bowdoin College is located in Brunswick which has a funky little "downtown". Topsham has a collection of old houses and historic buildings, but little in the way of "town". Although there is a mall with all the essential shopping.
Everyone wants lobster when they come to Maine - we have all the essential tools for a fun meal - plus an apple tree to eat it under ! On Fridays in Brunswick (just 5 miles) you can buy them from the "Lobster Ladies" at the Farmer's Market. Or any number of other places.
Drive down Route 24 to the very end - Bailey and Orr's Island - and do the tourist stuff. Or go to Popham or Reed State Parks - miles of white sandy beaches - a rarity in Maine and only 30 minutes away. Bath Maine is a wonderfully preserved old town with some fun shopping and good restaurants - just 10 minutes up Route 1. Freeport Maine - home of LL Bean and 20 minutes south - is another good day trip destination.
We have two kayaks that could be available to those who are experienced. They are hand made wooden kayaks meant to be used on the ocean. Paddling in the river here is a bit tricky, so we would want to be assured that anyone using them was a confident, experienced paddler. We are big birders and we enjoy watching the eagles and ospreys over the river. We have resident Orioles, Titmice, Red Wings, Turkeys, Chickadees - all the northern birds you would want to see. We have deer in the winter - they cross back and forth over the ice from the island.
Later in the summer, the wild rice grows tall on the sandbars out from the house. The changing tide (it is about 4 feet at this point) makes for an everchanging view.
