What you will love about this home
Spacious Victorian painted lady in a tranquil small-town neighborhood, only a few blocks from trendy Main Street, Great Barrington, with a lake and quiet country lanes only a few minutes' walk in the other direction.
Our small New England town (population 7, 000) is the center of the southern Berkshires and the market town for the tri-state area which includes northwestern Connecticut and Columbia County, New York. This is the hometown of W. E. B. Du Bois. Nearby is the original location of "Alice's Restaurant." Folk singer Arlo Guthrie, the son of Woody Guthrie, turned his Thanksgiving Day arrest for littering into one of the best-known songs and movies of the Vietnam War era. The town and area has had a lot of recent press, including this piece n Vogue https://www.vogue.com/article/whats-so-great-about-great-barrington-a-weekend-guide-to-the-berkshire-town as well as https://www.chronogram.com/hudsonvalley/great-barrington-bustle-in-the-berkshires/Content?oid=14521059.
The Berkshire Hills lie at the far west of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, in the heart of traditional New England. Great Barrington is due north of New York City and due west of Boston (about 130 miles from each city).
The house is a Victorian Italianate built in 1868. It has a spacious wooden deck (20x20feet) with table and chairs that overlooks flower and vegetable gardens and has a view of East Mountain. Steps lead to a 25-foot stone terrace that is perfect for entertaining.
It is a comfortable family home, full of books. It also has a large barn where we park our cars in the winter. This tranquil spot, surrounded by tall maple, pine and ash trees, is a cool green retreat from the crowds at Tanglewood. Because the house in on the Hill, breezes keep it cool even during hot summer weather. The family dining and sitting room has an air-conditioner (though we rarely use A/C), as does one bedroom, and many rooms are equipped with ceiling fans.
The Berkshires have long been known for their rural beauty and for a wide range of cultural activities. The Tanglewood Music Festival in Lenox (about 15 minutes to the north) is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and people come by the thousands from all over the world to be in the Berkshires for Tanglewood. The area is very popular in autumn, and there is downhill skiing at Butternut and Catamount in the winter, as well as plenty of cross-country skiing and even ice skating at the lake in our neighborhood.

What you will love about this neighborhood
Our 15-room Victorian Italianate house is on "The Hill," an attractive residential area immediately west of Great Barrington's Main Street. The house stands with its original carriage house on half an acre of land. It was built in 1868 and is listed on the National Historic Register. Some of the original farmhouses remain on nearby Castle Hill Avenue, with its view of East Mountain, and the surrounding neighborhood developed in the late 19th century.
The neighborhood has an old-fashioned feel. We often stroll or cycle up to the lake, as well as down to Main Street. Neighbors are friendly and kids come from miles around to trick-or-treat on Halloween. People visiting for the first time often exclaim "it's a real neighborhood" - the kind of neighborhood we thought, until we moved here, had disappeared in America. This is small town America at its best.
It is a pleasant five minutes' walk down the Hill to four movies, two dozen restaurants, wonderful yoga and fitness centers, and dozens of shops on Main and Railroad streets. From May to November fresh produce is sold Saturday morning at the Farmer's Market. There are free children's concerts every Saturday morning in the summer just beyond the railroad station, at the bandstand behind town hall, where there are Friday evening band concerts in the summer.
Walking ten minutes in the other direction you will find peaceful Lake Mansfield, extensive woodland, and the town beach. The land around the lake is owned by Simon's Rock College and thus undeveloped, giving a sense of being deep in the countryside as you stroll on the road that rings the east side of the lake. We are enthusiastic walkers and cyclists and can help you choose suitable routes. You'll be able to use our large collection of guidebooks, maps, and histories.
The range of outdoor and cultural activities is enormous, with a variety of summer theatre and music, and well-known cultural attractions including Tanglewood, Jacob's Pillow, Shakespeare & Company, Barrington Stage Company, the Norman Rockwell Museum, Hancock Shaker Village, and much, much more. In the winter, the Catamount and Butternut Basin ski areas are each only a ten-minute drive away, and cross-country ski trails are nearby as well.
There is an athletic center with a pool two miles away, at Simon's Rock College (day passes are $10), and on the other side of town is the Berkshire South Community Center. Both have up-to-date facilities and a variety of classes. If, on the other hand, you want complete peace and quiet, you can also find it here.
