What you will love about this home
My home is a mile from downtown Hilo, Hawaii, and about a 15 min drive to great snorkeling and swimming. It is 1.5 hour drive to bigger beaches. It is on the jungle side of. the big island, rich with culture and less tourism. The house is an old plantation home, over 100 years old. You will love looking out the window and seeing nature. You will love the beautiful plants, and listening to birds and wind chimes. You will love the convenient location. There is a washer and dryer and a huge clothes line. The living room faces the ocean and often the trade winds blow into that side. At night the wind comes from the other side, making the master bedroom cool to sleep in.
What you will love about this neighborhood
I live on a great walking road. It's in a country setting and beautiful, and goes up and downhill so you can easily get quite a bit of cardio. Actually you can walk for miles up the road, it is quite beautiful ! In the summer it's best to walk early or later, although there is a part of the road which is shady mid-day. I live in a safe and gated community which is surrounded by agriculture, mostly lychee and citrus trees. (It is gated because of the value of the fruit). You will probably see wild pigs on the other side of the fence, the babies are very cute. The gate on the road closes at 5 pm and opens at 6 am. I have lived here 26 years, and have never heard of any crime on this road. Hilo is very diverse, there are many wonderful cultures, which is one of the most interesting things about this town. There is incredible Thai food and sushi and Indian food and Chinese...and health food stores ! The farmers market is the real deal, twice a week, you can drink coconut water, eat lots of wierd and exotic fruits and veggies. With all the local fresh food and getting in the ocean, visiting the volcano and waterfalls, it can be a healthy place to be. Food is very expensive, so it helps to shop at the famers market.
Additional information
I rent my house, and the inside could use paint, which I have (mostly) not bothered to do. Probably once I move out my landlord will remodel. This is not a fancy new place, it is an old jungle house! There are lovely wood floors, although the bedrooms have painted floors. The plumbing is a bit finicky, but no big deal once I explain. I rarely see a cockroach in the house but if you leave food out you will! You really have to clean up after every meal (no dishwasher), otherwise you could also get ants. Unfortunately, fire ants have also come to our island. For some people the bites hurt or itch for a few days, everyone is different. I will treat for them under the house before I leave but even with that they are tiny and will find a way in if the counters are not cleaned after food prep. There are geckos scampering over the walls. I used to have them eating out of my hand but then my cat murdered my favorite, so I no longer feed them. However, they do poop in the corners, and after several weeks it may look like you have not cleaned for decades. Coqui frogs have also recently invaded this island. They are never in the house but you might hear them in the evening and then they relax a little later. We usually dont have mosquitos, but maybe after a rain keep screen doors closed. August and September are the hottest months. I have rarely seen it get up to 90, but it's humid here so even 85 feels intense if you are in the sun. Jumping in the ocean changes your day. The best part of summer is just being in the ocean, it is amazing ! It definitely cools down at night. I have needed a sheet and light blanket at night unless the weather is unusual. I have a window AC in one room, and fans in other rooms.
