What you will love about this home
We have nick-named our home "I Must Be Dreaming - Pinch Me!" which has a double meaning. The first is that we are so amazed to actually have this special place to enjoy and call our own. It is truly like we are dreaming. The second is for all the blue crabs that make their home in the marsh that we overlook. :) The house itself was built in 2005 and has what we call an upside down floor plan. It is two stories high and the living spaces and main bedroom are on the upper level. Our views of the marsh are calming and ever-changing as the tides rise and fall and the sunlight continues to reflect off the grass a multitude of colors throughout the day. We love spending time there in every season, each one having its own special highlights. There is so much to do on the island that we often don't fit it all in... and sometimes we just choose to do nothing and enjoy the marsh from our porch or living area and maybe work on a jigsaw puzzle or play some of the many games we have.
The main bedroom (upstairs) is spacious with a walk-in closet, double sink, and large shower with bench. A sitting room with a desk, sofa, and balcony are off the main bedroom giving a space for quiet refuge. There is a powder room upstairs as well. Downstairs there are three bedrooms, two of them opening out onto the screened in porch. All the bedrooms have their own full bath. One bedroom has a day bed (so two twins), and one has a queen bed. The third is a large room with two twin beds and a king bed, along with a porch that has a view of the marsh. This room has a bathroom with double sink and tub. Laundry room is downstairs along with storage closets. The fifth bedroom with bathroom is what we call a crofter - bedroom suite over the garage for guests who prefer a little more privacy. Kitchen is upstairs and fully equipped with extras like coffee, and some seasonings and condiments. Drip coffee pot, Keurig maker, and blender are all there. And we just got a brand new air fryer! You are welcome to use whatever you find but be considerate of the next arrivals if you use up items. The stove is gas, and there is a gas grill behind the house on the marsh side, with a light for grilling in the dark, and we have all the grill tools you will need.
The garage houses two golf carts - four-seater and six-seater that is brand new! It is a tight fit so please be careful backing out and pulling in! There are also paddle ball and bocce games, plenty of beach chairs, some boogie boards, sand toys, and shade canopies for the beach. We have five bikes in the garage when we are not on the island. But we have bike stands outside the garage and we leave them out while we are there. Riding is easy on the flat roads shaded throughout the island by the beautiful oak trees. The dock behind the house is the perfect vantage point for dazzling sunrises OR sunsets, fishing and crabbing. Because of the few lights around, you can even see the Milky Way at night!

What you will love about this neighborhood
Bald Head Island is a unique island community that is accessed by pedestrian ferry where the vacation begins. There are no cars on the island so the mode of transport around the three by one mile island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River is by golf cart. We have a four-seater and six-seater. This makes the island a peaceful place where you can truly unwind and relax. The island does boast many amenities, too, such as a beautiful and newly renovated beach golf course and club with three restaurants, outdoor pool and water park, tennis and pickleball courts, indoor fitness facility, and croquet greensward (award winning and host of the 2012 world championships!). Temporary memberships are available with our rental. This would be arranged directly with the Club (BHIClub.net).
It's easy to take your coolers, luggage and beach toys by pulling up to the ferry landing in the little coastal town of Southport, NC. There the dock hands will help unload your vehicle and load everything onto dollies that they will roll onto the ferry. You will then board the ferry for a 20 minute cruise where you will meet local residents, short term visitors, and lots of four-legged friends. Bald Head Island is a very dog-friendly place. Don't worry if you have forgotten anything as the village boasts the Maritime Market where you can buy groceries and also prepared food, if you'd rather. There are also several restaurants on the island if you would rather just eat out.
After the ferry docks in the harbor, you claim your luggage and the tram drivers load everything up for your ride to the house. You'll likely have another chance to visit with your neighbors as our stop on the east side of the island away from the harbor is usually one of the last of the two or three stops on the tram.
The island has a community funded barrier island study center that enables research by scientists from around the world on sea turtle habitats and maritime forest ecology. Children's camps are held there all summer long and the turtle nesting season is an exciting part of BHI life in the summer and fall.
Beautiful beaches encircle the island and there are wide open spaces even on the most crowded day of the year. Tidal creeks and marshes that you can see from our living room and porches provide opportunities for canoeing, kayaking (we have one of each), fishing, crabbing or just bird-watching. The dock behind the house is the perfect vantage point for dazzling sunrises OR sunsets. Because of the few lights around, you can even see the Milky Way!
Our home is on the marsh in an area called Keepers Landing. This is towards the eastern side of the island minutes away from pristine beaches. The dock out back is visible from the house and a great place to fish or just hang out. Keepers Landing is near the Bald Head Island Conservancy and there are lots of small parks, common areas and trails where you can take easy walks or bike rides.
