Description

What you will love about this home

We call our place a little corner of heaven on earth. Our 200-year-old historic house (1820) is cozy inside and out, surrounded by a landscaped garden of evergreens, perched on a knoll in a quiet yet friendly neighborhood. Privacy and tranquility are assured, but so is community just a few steps away. Walkers, dog enthusiasts, joggers and bikers use our streets because cars are so sparse.

Make yourself at home at the kitchen table by the picture windows, and watch the birds feeding outside while you enjoy your breakfast inside by the fire. Or take your cup of tea and climb the Crow’s Nest over the garden shed to catch the sun rising over Wantastiquet Mountain on the other side of the Connecticut River. Read on the patio under the towering cedar tree. Sleep late in the canopy bed and start the day in the tub. When you are ready for 19 miles of forest trails, just find the footpath two blocks away. That is, unless you’d rather walk downtown to savor anything from New York-style bagels to authentic Thai.

Brattleboro will surprise you with its eclectic charm.

What you will love about this neighborhood

Brattleboro, Vermont, is situated in the Connecticut River Valley at the confluence of the West River. It has an energy that was recognized by the indigenous Abenaki to be remarkable. Petroglyphs at the riverside marked the powerful forces of earth, sky, water and sun that converge here. Recently, current generations with indigenous ancestry plus allies have been reclaiming some of this history and the land. It’s a wonderful work-in-progress.

The neighborhood where we live is a gem. If you want to experience a traditional Vermont town, Brattleboro and our part of it are exemplary. The architecture is both grand and picturesque as well as simple and functional. That is because of the two-tier social history of employers and workers: specifically, the Estey Organ Company established itself in Brattleboro in the late 1800’s and remained in production until the 1960’s. The 1960’s brought a counter-cultural influx that brought a certain flower-child vibe still felt today. The School for International Training took Brattleboro global. Currently our community is welcoming refugees from all over the world, especially Afghanis.

Local restaurant fare is uniformly good and frequently excellent. Within walking distance (or a short drive away) are the scenic Marina set on the West River; the Porch with homemade farm-to-table breakfast and lunch; authentic Thai, Indian, Dim Sum and Israeli food; quality vegan and vegetarian dishes as well as the regular assortment of pizza houses. Brattleboro is known for its many craft beer houses and distilleries. The Whetstone Beer Company overlooking the Connecticut is not to be missed. From their deck, you may well spot an American bald eagle!

Outdoor activities abound here and throughout Vermont. Walk two blocks from our home to the footpath leading to 19 miles of wooded trails through the woods and hills of the Retreat Farm. Rent a canoe or kayak one mile down the road to explore the waters of the Connecticut-West Rivers, or else walk the adjoining trail through the next few villages. Swimming holes are known to all locals and gladly shared with you. Or you can make the short trip to Spofford Lake across the bridge in New Hampshire. Of course, Vermont is world renowned as the Mecca for East coast skiing! Brattleboro has its own decent ski hill, though you may wish to try the better known Mt. Snow (40 minutes) or Killington (90 minutes), both easily accessible from our home.

Additional information

PLEASE NOTE CAREFULLY:
This summer and fall 2024, we can offer primarily HOSPITALITY! That is, we are happy to HOST 2 people for Guest Points for several days WHILE OUR FAMILY IS STILL IN RESIDENCE. Please note that our family includes three respectful humans, two aloof cats and one medium-sized rescue hound who loves everybody. If you also have an agreeable pooch, we can discuss hosting him or her, too.
You would have the upstairs master bedroom-bath suite as your personal, private space as well as the spacious living room downstairs. The rest of our home would be shared like family.
In fall 2024, we may have some more flexibility for reciprocal and non-reciprocal exchanges, especially during school vacation times. HOSPITALITY stays continue to be primary.
