What you will love about this home
Our home is a gardener's haven. It is filled with plants - both indoors and outdoors. We have made a lot of the furniture ourselves and are continuously working on artistic additions. Last year we received Highly Commended in the "NZ Shed of the Year" competition with our bath-house / meditation sanctuary.
We have a quarter acre section filled with fruit trees, perennials, a greenhouse and of course the bath-house. We have an extensive garage and workshop, which both Jay and Kate use for woodwork projects. At the back of the garage is a small cottage - in which lives a permanent house guest - who will be there when we are away. Our main house and all the grounds surrounding it are, of course, free to be used by guests. Two cats live in our home - they are both quite shy and spend most of their time in the garden or in their special sleeping places.
In winter everyone hangs out in the open plan lounge / kitchen / dining room around the log burner. In summer we spend most of our time on the porch or in the garden.
We have bikes that are free to be used to explore the area and a car available for long term guests if we make a simultaneous exchange.

What you will love about this neighborhood
We live in Motueka, which is the closest town of any size (8000 residents) to the Abel Tasman National Park. This park is renowned for its forest-fringed, golden beaches, calm azure waters and sculpted granite headlands and islands. The Abel Tasman Park is one of the "Great Walks" in New Zealand. This means it is renowned for its unique beauty and high quality walking tracks. You can take day trips into the park (20 mins drive from our home) else start at Marahau and walk along the network of huts and camping sites - anything from 3-7 days - to end up in Golden Bay. There are a variety of options available for those not keen to slog under the weight of a backpack - including getting the boat operators to drop your bag / tent off at the next hut on your route each day, so you can travel light.
Down the road from us is the picturesque Maori pah (meeting house). If you are interested, you may be able to take part in a powhiri (welcoming onto the marae) and join in traditional cultural programs.
Motueka is an apple and kiwifruit region, rural and rustic. There is one main street with shops and cafes, two supermarkets and several schools, movie theatres, library, salt water baths and a recreation centre in the vicinity. Our home is within walking or easy biking distance of most of these amenities.
Aside from the Abel Tasman Park, we also border the Kahurangi National Park which has vast tracts of walks for keen hikers.
There are many beautiful cycling tracks surrounding us and we are on the Tasman Great Taste trail - which is a stretch of cycling tracks that goes along the coast from the golden sands of Kaiteriteri Beach to Nelson and also to Kohatu Junction (inland)- depending on the direction you wish to take. There are many great day trips that can be taken on the bikes.

Additional information
The calendar shows the NZ school holiday dates - when we are available to do exchanges. Outside of these times, because we live here - we would welcome house guests and love to meet and share with people from other cultures.
We are a vegetarian household and we would expect guests to respect this.
For hospitality stays, you would be given privacy and the opportunity to share stories and food in the evenings. For me, when I travel - meeting and exchanging stories with others is the main highlight of any trip - rather than the sights. This is what sticks in my memory long after the photo shoots prove I was in a place.
Please feel free to contact me :-)
