What you will love about this home
*please check calendar*
Our home is a hidden sanctuary overlooking a ricefield yet in the centre of the highly desirable café society of Penestanan in Ubud. There is a two-storey main house and an open-plan studio cottage next to it. You will love their tall ceilings and airiness. The houses are separated by a plunge pool and surrounded by tropical gardens within a Balinese compound. Both houses are decorated with an eclectic mix of modern art, tribal artifacts, and unique furniture.
The main house has a downstairs galley kitchen (gas stove and oven) with a marble-tiled dining room, lounge room, and verandah looking towards a reflecting pond and rice field. The downstairs bathroom is massive, with a huge tub, separate shower, and plantation shutter doors opening to a tiny terrace complete with a garden chandelier (a cute spot for a foot spa). Upstairs is a large romantic open-plan bedroom and sitting room with wide timber floors and wickerwork ceilings. It includes a king-sized four-poster bed (200x200 cm) with a mosquito net, a magical wooden-shuttered powder room, and a sitting room with a little library of books about Bali. You can watch the sunrise from bed, and the sunset from the wicker chairs on the balcony (with a cocktail, of course!).
The main house and the studio cottage are separated by a plunge pool. The pool has stepping stones at the shallow end, and a little balé (gazebo) at the far end where you can sit and dip your toes in the water. The BBQ is next to the balé.
The studio cottage is a huge open-plan bedroom, sitting room, and study. There is a double bed (140x200 cm) with a mosquito net, a living room with a cement-molded day bed, and a desk and chairs. The crisp white Bali-style bathroom has a rain shower open to the sky. From the studio folding plantation shutters lead to a little terrace, with a frangipani tree growing out of it, and surrounded by water fed by a fountain. From the bed of the studio-cottage you can look out to a tropical garden, including a small water garden (with pots of water lilies, lotus, and little fish), frangipani trees (laden with birdnest and staghorn ferns), banana trees, the house shrine, and a statue of Ganesha. There may be orchids in bloom.
Recently renovated, the houses and garden draw upon Balinese, Moroccan, Provençal, and Colonial Indochine influences. They also hint at rustic ruins (including a little archaeological folly laid into the floor of the studio) offset by modern organic elements. It is aesthetically relaxing with delightful quirky touches.

What you will love about this neighborhood
We live in Penestanan, a small subvillage of Ubud - the arts, culture, and culinary centre of Bali. Our little sanctuary is hidden and off the road, yet it is only a 2 minute walk along a path to cafes, restaurants, spas, local artists' studios, and yoga shalas.
This part of the village is car-free (park 7 minutes away by foot), and the small road only allows local scooters (no-through traffic), while the many pathways are pedestrian-only and ramble past villas, cafes, ricefields and views. Within a 2 minute walk you have reached local cafes, restaurants, and stalls displaying tropical fruit; walk 5-10 minutes to a plethora of vibrant restaurants catering to all cuisines, and the supermarket stocked with local and international produce. The paths also link to rice fields, temples, a ravine grotto filled with relief carvings, the famous Campuhan Ridge walk, and the main road leading into the centre of bustling Ubud which is 20 min by foot (lots of window shopping on the way), 10 minutes by car, or 7 min by scooter.
Ubud is a culinary, arts, and festival hub: look out for the world-renowned Writers & Readers Festival (where our profile pic is taken), the fabulous Food Festival, music festivals, local Artisan Markets, and various spiritual festivals. Ubud has over 800 restaurants and is also a shopping destination for local crafts or young designer wears. To get a feel for local culture there are art museums and the Ubud Palaces have traditional music and dance performances every night. To really immerse yourself in local culture consider a short language course at Cinta Bahasa Indonesian Language School (just up the road or they can provide a private tutor to come to the house).
Ricefields are part of the Balinese culture and are constantly under cultivation: planting, ripening, harvesting. Before planting, the sacred Bali calendars are consulted and prayers and offerings are made. There is always something happening in the rice field: the green of growing, the yellow of ripening, labourers carrying out the harvesting, ducks churning the soil during the fallow period. We cannot predict which view of the little ricefield you will get during your stay at our villa, but do take the time to appreciate its cycle. There are many rice fields in this neighbourhood, each at a different stage in its cycle, so walking around the area is a charming experience.

Additional information
We aim for sustainable practices, from some natural products we will leave for you in your welcome kit (just in case you forget your toothbrush etc), to the use of fans and plantation shutters for cooling (there is no aircon and no hairdryer).
The house is managed by a Balinese husband and wife. Nyoman, the husband, will pick you up at the airport (or other location) and bring you to the house (Rupiah 450k from airport, about $40 per car). It is necessary to use Nyoman as the house is hard to find, but once you are here it is easy to get around. Kadek, his wife, does the housekeeping. A thorough cleaning is carried out before and after your stay (total Rupiah 450k, about $40). If you require a driver, tour guide, scooter, extra housekeeping (200 k), or a babysitter, just arrange it directly with them and pay them directly. They are a lovely couple and very helpful and honest. Nyoman is also an excellent tour guide.
We prefer guests to stay 3-7 nights (longer than 7 days requires extra housekeeping). The house is perfect for two couples as the layout provides privacy. Due to the house's artistic elements, it will only suit calm children and teenagers. The open water features around the houses must be treated with care: no running, jumping, or diving in or around the pool. No parties.
We have a little cat named Black Panther. He was rescued from the side of the road when a tiny 2 weeks old, he is shy with strangers and will keep his distance (be calm and quiet to make friends with him). There are tiny fish in the outdoor water pots.
