Description

Sven has described his/her home in English, German.

What you will love about this home

Our very bright and spacious flat is on the 5th floor (German: 4. Etage - very peculiar us Germans, right?) of a typical Hamburg house from the end of the 19th century with very high ceilings. The flat is 117 square meters / 1260 square feet large and consists of five rooms, one kitchen, one bathroom, one half bath and two balconies.

The flat is (in our humble opinion of course) nicely decorated and in itself pretty beautiful. But, who are we to judge? It has hard wood floors throughout (not in the kitchen and bathrooms of course). The flat is especially bright and airy because there is no house on the other side of the road and in the backyard it takes a while as well until you see the next house. So you can enjoy the famous (well...) Hamburg sun undisturbed the whole day in the flat. You'll be able to do that especially good on either of our two balconies. The balcony to the backyard gets sun from sunrise until 3pm in the afternoon and the balcony facing the street gets the sun directly after 3pm and you'll be able to enjoy the sunset there.

If you don't want to while away your day on our balcony you'll have the choice of 5 other rooms to do so. If you are a couch-potato, that is. And these rooms are:

Our sleeping room - with our "family bed" - it is kind of hard to motivate the kids to sleep in their room, so we tackled the problem by buying a second bed and now we have a reeeeally big bed. Which means: two queen beds put together. 300cmx200cm of comfortable sleeping. Also some dressers and our big cupboards. That room easily sleeps a midsize family or a junior soccer team.....

The bigger children's room has a bunk bed (140x200 on the lower, 90x200 on the upper level) and a sofa that can be used as a sofa bed (140x200) and the smaller childrens room has a loft bed (140x200). Also you'll find tons of books and toys. Oh and you'll find a walking bike (age 2 / 3) and two kids's mountain bike (one suitable from age 4 until 6 and the other from 6 until maybe 10) in the basement.

The dining room - here you'll find the large wooden dining table which seats 6-12 people (if expanded). In the corner you'll find an old tiled stove. But that's just for show. The room has an iphone-dock/speaker and from here you'll get to the roadside-balcony. The dining room connects with....

The Living room - which boasts a vinyl collection of about 1100 LPs, a functional tiled stove (so they say - we never used it....). A big sofa-couch, two armchairs. And an okay sized (50inch) Samsung HD Smart TV. We do have digital-cable TV with a built in digital video recorder in the receiver, Netflix,Prime Video, DAZN and Sky Supersports Ticket is featured on the TV.

We have two bath rooms. On is more a toilet/lavatory/WC with only a sink and the toilet. The other has a sink and a bath tub.

The kitchen is large enough for a table with 5 chairs. Usually our two high chairs stand here. The kitchen has a ceramic (glass) hob, an oven and a microwave (which you'll find in the small storage room off the kitchen. The dishwasher and washing machine live in the kitchen as well. So do the fridge and the freezer of course. Oh, and another iphone dock/speaker. From the kitchen you'll get to the backyard balcony.

Our flat is in the neigborhood EIMSBÜTTEL. Which is on of the most densly populated in Hamburg yet it feels green and airy throughout. You'll find a very nice park right on the other side of the road - The Eimsbütteler Park. Which has a large playground, a lake, a nice café and a wading pool for the neighborhood which gets filled on warm days. And it is a perfect place to bbq!

Just around the corner you'll find a supermarket and all the shops you'll need for your daily life (groceries, pharmacies, an uncountable amount of cafés and redtaurants etc.). And you''ll find the Osterstrasse which ist a very nice neighborhood-shopping-street. And even better the Eppendorfer Weg.

There are two different bus stop virtually on the other side of the road. The lines 20 and 25 bring you in 10 minutes to the center of the neighborhood of Altona/Ottensen - which is the second largest shopping and dining district in Hamburg with tons of shops and cafés in a nice neighborhood. The line 4 brings you in 15 minutes to the city center / town hall with all the high street shopping and all the seightseeing you'll need.

There are two subway stops roughly 8-10 walking minutes away. The subway brings you in 10 minutes to several places in the city center and to the main railway station.

The (in)famous Schanzenviertel with all it's counter culture, shopping, creative folks, cafés, restaurants, the Rote Flora, the Schanzenpark is just 15 walking minutes away.

And Hamburgs most famous district St. Pauli (file under "former red-light-district-now-gentrified-with-tons-of-tourists-on-weekend-nights that never sleeps") with the infamous Reeperbahn is about 25 walking minutes away.

If you (really???) want to leave Hamburg - the modest city that dubs itself "the most beautiful city in the world" - then you'll be at the sea (north or baltic) in roughly 50-75 minutes driving. The train brings you pretty close to the beaches of the baltic sea. The ICE (Germany's fastest train) brings you from Hamburg Main Station to Berlin in about 90-100 minutes. And you'll be in Denmark in about 100-120 minutes from Hamburg.

What you will love about this neighborhood

The neighborhood of EIMSBÜTTEL is on of the most densly populated neighborhoods of the (100+) neighborhoods of Hamburg. But Hamburg is a veeeery (with lot of e's) green city. So don't expect Manhattan. Expect a relaxing yet urban neighborhood with tons of old and stately houses and a tree every 5 meters. And parks. And a channel. In Eimsbüttel you'll find several nice shopping streets (especially Osterstraße and Eppendorfer Weg which are just 2 mins from the apartment) which retain their "neighborhood-feel". Cafés and restaurants galore. I could name you at least a dozen each that are worth spending time and money. So just ask. Eimsbüttel has several nice parks (Eimsbütteler Park is just on the other side of our apartment) and green spaces. Oh, and Eimsbüttel is (nearly) the birthplace of German HipHop - and then it was called "Eimsbusch". You don't need a car in Eimsbüttel. You'll walk.

You'll start your day with a nice morning run at the Kaiser-Friedrich Ufer or to the Alster Lake if you're up for it. You'll buy your groceries at the small turkish owned AVRASYA in Eppendorfer Weg, you'll grab a coffee at BLACK LINE in Eppendorfer Weg or at the small Park Café in Eimsbütteler Park, try on of the extraordinary pastries, rolls, cakes at KLEINE KONDITOREI (expect queues, is so famous and loved in Eimsbüttel) and you'll drink it while reading a book at the Kaiser-Friedrich-Ufer or in the Eimsbütteler Park. Watching the ducks or people playing Boule. Late you'll do some shopping up Eppendorfer Weg until the posh neighborhood of Eppendorf. And in the evening you'll grab a slice of pizza at PIAZZA TRAPPANI or try ramen at the RAMEN BAR in Eppendorfer Weg. And if you don't end the day with a beer at the AUSTER Bar you'll enjoy the sunset from our balcony.

Eimsbüttel has it all. Or: most of it. If not: it very close to the city center with the famous town hall, the Alster Lake or the Hafen City with the Elbphilarmonie. Oh and high street shopping. The (in)famous Schanzenviertel borders Eimsbüttel. In fact was part of Eimsbüttel once. There you'll find all things alternative or "counter culture". Well before it was gentrified. And the Elbe-River is close as well. To the famous HAGENBECKS Zoo it's just 2 subway stops.

From Eimsbüttel you'll be very fast nearly everywere in Hamburg. Well not everywhere of course - Hamburg has roughly 2 million inhabitants. But you'll be very fast there, where you'll want to be. Because all the hotspots for tourists and Hamburgers as well are pretty close to Eimsbüttel.
