What you will love about this home
Our three story, four bedroom home is on the Bruce Peninsula, in Ontario, Canada. We are located on Lake Huron, in the village of Oliphant, ON. We have an incredible view of the Oliphant Fishing Islands with 30 feet of window exposure facing west. The Oliphant sunsets are truly unforgetable summer or winter!
Our home is a three storey home. Our home has pine floors, wood trim, is full of light and is comfortable. The furniture is an eclectic collection of old and new. (Note that we have recently painted, and pictures need to be updated. (Walls in the living space and most of the bedrooms are white.) As well, we have a new deck off the back of the house that does not appear in these pictures, which will be updated, shortly.
Our living space is on the third floor. It is open concept and includes a family room, dining room, kitchen and washroom. (800 square feet per floor.) There is a wood stove to enjoy. The front of this story has 30 feet of glass, giving a wonderful view of the lake by day and stars by night.
A large 20 X 30 foot deck extends off the third story of the home to be enjoyed morning and night.
The second story has four bedrooms (3 queens, 1 double, and a set of bunks), a washroom and laundry. The second story provides access to our backyard deck and firepit.
The ground level including a wood shop artists studio and garage that is used for storage. There is a ping pong table in the shop. Guests will not have the use of any of the water sports equipment stored in the basement, access to any of the sports equipment stored in the basement.
We have a heat exchange system for the home that provides air conditioning in summer, and a second heat pump with air conditioning on the third storey, which heats up considerably more than the other two levels. we provide instructions for balancing the two systems for your comfort. It works well.
The shoreline is across the road, the shorelands being a mix of coastal fens and sand, home to several rare and endangered species. There is a dock that we share with neighbours that you may use to access the water. We have a deck at the end of that dock, that our family uses on the shore. Within a few km of our door you will find many shorebirds, including eagles, reptiles at risk, orchids, and more. Beyond the sensitive shorelands are the warm, shallow, sheltered waters of Sandy Bay in Lake Huron. The conditions and environment here have made this a spot favoured by water sport enthusiasts who enjoy kitesurfing, paddling and boating in the summer and people those who enjoy nordic skiing and snowshoeing in the winter. (Groomed cross country ski trails are within 10 minutes of our home and the adventurous enjoy the frozen lake, which is our favourite location in winter, as well.)

What you will love about this neighborhood
Oliphant is a small cottage community that is quiet in the winter and welcomes back many cottagers in the summer to the mainland homes and cottages and Oliphant Fishing Islands, a few km off shore. It is a very unique community, that beckons to the mariner's spirit. It is steeped in history of our First Nations people, of the first white settlers and fisherman. Oliphant loving families tend to return here for generations.
Restaurants, groceries and services can be found in Sauble Beach a lively tourist destination in the summer, just 13 km. south, or in Wiarton (13 km.). Owen Sound, is the closest small city. about 26 km south east (Population 20,000.) Saugeen Shores which includes Southampton and Port Elgin, is a lovely day visit as well.
Oliphant people embrace winter. There are snowmobile trails, groomed nordic ski trails, and local winter festivals to enjoy!
Oliphant is situated on the western coast of Bruce Peninsula. The eastern coastline is on Georgian Bay. The Niagara Escarpment runs up the east side of the peninsula, creating an extremely unique and diverse environment on the Bruce Peninsula which has been designated a world biosphere. The peninsula is home to the Bruce Peninsula National Park and Fathom Five National Marine Park. From the striking overhangs on the top of the Niagara Escarpment, overlooking the deep blue waters of Georgian Bay to the vastly different sand shores of Lake Huron, coastal fens, and rock pavements on Lake Huron, there is something for everyone close by. The harbour of Tobermory, is an hours drive a popular diving destination and the place where many ships of earlier times, found their grave. The area if favoured by cyclists, and is part of the cross Canada bike trail. The Bruce Trail is wonderful for hiking.
The Great Lakes levels have been fluctuating. They were at the highest in recent years, in 2022, and we are on a return cycle to lower lake levels. This means that you may (or may not) have a walk a few hundred metres to the edge of the water. Once you are there, you will find ideal warm water and a rippled sandy bottom.
If you prefer more action, and a wider, sandier beach, there is a family beach 3 km. down the road, and the larger 7 km long tourist beach of Sauble Beach, 13 km south.
