Although we have lived in San Miguel de Allende for years, we were tired of living in the center of this beautiful but busy town. We found an interesting contemporary house in a quiet neighborhood only a 20-minute walk from the colonial heart of San Miguel. Our neighbors are typical Mexicans – polite, kind, and thoughtful, as are the occasional expat neighbors who dot the landscape.
Our house boasts a striking modern architectural design with iron and glass elements throughout. It faces south so the house is filled with light. The lush garden, complete with a fountain and splash pool, provide a serene retreat in the heart of the city.
The primary ensuite bedroom, on the ground floor, accommodates a king-sized bed, includes a fireplace, and provides easy access to the outdoor garden and the splash pool. A conveniently located laundry room is also found on this level.
Mike’s study, with a small television, sofa bed, work space, and a fridge is also on the ground floor.
Ascend to the first floor to find a sun-lit kitchen with a water filtration system for safe drinking water. The dining area is also flooded with light from floor to ceiling windows over-looking the splash pool and lush garden below. A small terrace in the tree-tops of a tall lemon tree, also lined with pots of trees and flowering shrubs, is an intimate place in which to dine or to just relax.
The living room features a fireplace, a special collection of etchings over a large, comfortable sofa, several other artful additions, and a television. A powder room is down the hall.
The second floor hosts a beautiful ensuite guest room with its own fireplace, a large desk, a fridge and a coffee maker. Beautiful linens are in all of the bedrooms. The view from our top floor is of San Miguel’s iconic church, the Parroquia, and of several other Spanish Colonial churches in the heart of town. It is spectacular site! Three steps farther up one finds a lovely terrace surrounded by more pots of trees, and a hammock (A gardener comes three times a week to care for all these wonderful trees and plants.).
This is our permanent home and we love it!

Lo que te va a encantar del barrio
There are no high-rises anywhere in San Miguel, and no stop signs or traffic lights. It is “I go, you go” when driving across these cobblestone streets. Pedestrian traffic has the right-of-way. Our sidewalks are often single file, making our narrow streets a bit wider for our wider vehicles (The horse and buggy of old were way smaller!). And do look down when walking – there are bumps and the odd hole to look out for.
There is a coffee shop or two down the street from our house, a nearby carniceria, fruteria, and other small shops. A huge local market, San Juan de Dios, is only a five-minute walk, and it is a 15 -minute walk to the Biblioteca, and another 8 minutes to the vibrant Jardin.

Mexico and it’s stunning city of San Miguel de Allende is a visual feast of decorative arts and architectural details. Adornment of the exterior and interior of public and private buildings, from Mayan and Aztec, to Mexican Colonial architecture of the 16th,17th, and 18th centuries, to the sleek, yet blazingly colorful forms of today, show aesthetic richness and a natural inclination to embellish daily life with art.
Civilizations existing in Mexico before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors honored their gods with art and architecture, mostly in the form of religious buildings. The second highest pyramids in the world, located northwest of Mexico City, are examples of how much these ancient peoples valued superior work and craftsmanship. The enormous influence of 400 years of Spanish rule is evident in lavish architectural details of the Plateresque, Baroque, Churrihueresque and Neoclassical styles. Public and private buildings in San Miguel, Morelia, Patzcuaro and Guanajuato blaze the glories of these periods with elegant facades, thick adobe walls, carved doors, graceful archways and staircases, elegant balconies surrounding inner patios and hidden gardens
For the indigenous peoples of Mexico, artistic expression was/is a form of cultural past and present. The Spanish conquerors easily recognized the Indians technical mastery of clay, wood, vegetable fibers, metals, and textiles. One example is found in the lush, green mountain village of Patzcuaro, in the State of Michoacan. Bishop Vasco de Quiroga, in 1536, established a bishopric in Patzcuaro, and developed in each neighboring community its own cooperative for its own craft specialty. How fortunate we are today to be able to walk around a beautiful sixteenth century town, barely untouched in 400 years, to admire the magnificent old mansions, churches and squares, and to drive around the green mountainous countryside to see Quiroga’s legacies at work, continuing to make their specialty crafts which are exhibited around the world.
San Miguel de Allende is filled with aesthetic richness. Rich colors, eclectic stylistic forms, stunning interior designs, magnificent paintings, historical monuments, elegant Colonial buildings; beautiful tiles adorning building facades, church interiors, fountains, and kitchens; quaint cobblestone streets with graceful lanterns, carved doors, flower vendors and donkeys. Throw in the wonderful foods, music and clothing of the polite, gentle and religious Mexicans and you have a feast for every sense.
I have lived for the past 23 years in San Miguel de Allende and have obviously fallen in love with Mexico and the Mexican people. As a tour leader in San Miguel, I can send you all kinds of information regarding what to see and do during your stay in San Miguel. You will be amazed and surprised, and learn a great deal about the art, architecture, interior design elements, and the foods of our special town.
