Northern Burgundy:
A beautiful getaway just a stone's throw from Paris
Renowned for its gentle way of life, its vineyards, its cellars and its gastronomy, Auxerre and its region are the guarantee of a stay rich in activities and well-being.
Discovery...
Auxerre is waiting for you...
Auxerre, so well known to football enthusiasts, offers many other particularities worthy of interest. Located on the banks of the Yonne and crossed by Agrippa's great road which, since Roman times, has linked Rome to Brittany, Auxerre has been able to take advantage of its geographical location and has been enriched with a number of architectural and artistic testimonies over the centuries.
At the beginning of the 17th century, thanks to the water coaches, Paris was only 4 days away by boat and, even today, by strolling in the Marine district, one can easily guess what important economic activity must have taken place there.
Other districts have also kept their charm of yesteryear and their alleys still bear the names of the various craft guilds of the time. Walk through them to reach the many remains, palaces, cloisters, private mansions, which fill the 65 hectares of the old city. A city that proudly displays its Cities of Art and History label. It was awarded in 1995 and ranks Auxerre among the most beautiful cities in France. The highlight is St. Stephen's Cathedral, an imposing historical monument, which is worth a visit in itself.
Chablis, the taste buds in turmoil...
A few kilometres away, nestled at the foot of illustrious vineyards, Chablis, which was once an austere village closed to tourism, has become a welcoming destination, conducive to spending memorable gastronomic moments.
In addition to its exceptional wines, whose qualities of the terroir and the exemplary know-how of the winemakers are known throughout the world, you will also find a remarkable restaurant. Vineyard lovers can take beautiful walks in vineyards that take place on the hillsides all around the village. You can admire the softness of the landscape and discover the old vines of the most famous grands crus.
It is truly a beautiful destination in all seasons, but especially during the harvest when the vineyards are nothing but a riot of golden colours or at the time of the wine festival in October. Another highlight, since 1999 Chablis has been celebrating Saint-Vincent again, where the wine "flows freely" despite the cold and thousands of people are there. It is an unforgettable moment for all the participants.
Vézelay, to meet the light...
Pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela or simple tourists, let yourself be amazed by this exceptional place. Visible from afar, this medieval village seems to be placed like a crown on the "Eternal Hill".
Vézelay collects labels. The small town is classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France", it is the fourth French site recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, along with Mont Saint Michel, Chartres Cathedral and the Palace of Versailles. And, the entire hill has been classified as a "Historic Site".
Here, every home is part of history. The influx of pilgrims had been so important for ages that the cellars of many houses had to be used as lodgings. Here, many pilgrims have climbed the hill to reach the basilica.
Sainte-Madeleine, a masterpiece of cosmic dimensions. Indeed, its orientation axis and internal structure take into account the position of the earth in relation to the sun. During the summer solstice, the sunlight casts large regular patches of light in the middle of the nave, like a path of light that leads you from the entrance to the altar. Vézelay invites you to meditation and especially the small chapel of Sainte-Croix "La Cordelle". This peaceful place, located in the middle of nature, invites us to listen to the song of the birds as well.
Not to mention the proximity of the castles of the Loire, Paris, Lyon, etc. Burgundy is at the heart of many destinations.
