Was Sie an dieser Unterkunft lieben werden
Our family home is an 18th century farmhouse in the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty between York and the North York Moors.
Down a quiet lane on the edge of the village of Oswaldkirk, Broad Farm sits on a south-facing slope with a very fine open view across the valley below. From the house and garden you see only our own 10-acre paddock and the fields, hedgerows and woodland beyond.
Recently renovated and extended, the house is spacious and well-decorated but, more than anything, welcoming and homely. A traditional Aga combined with modern central heating and insulation make it warm and cosy in winter; in summer thick stone walls keep it cool.
There are beds for 14 people. Of the six bedrooms, one has a single bed (with an additional pull-out single), one has bunk beds, three have double beds and one has two double beds.
A variety of attractive living/recreational spaces inside and out make it a good option for either smaller or larger groups and allow for both time together and time apart.
INSIDE, at the informal end of the house is our beautiful big kitchen and sunroom. The kitchen is well equipped, sits 12 to eat at an old oak table and offers the best views of all for those who wash up! Connected is the sunroom – what we call the playroom. Another big, light room, double height with exposed beams, it offers comfy sofas, a big new TV and DVDs, books, toys and games for all ages. In turn, the playroom opens onto the flag stone terrace and another 12-seat table for eating outside. At the other end, there is a peaceful sitting room and formal dining room with an open fire, antique furniture, and more books. There’s a Sonos speaker system at both ends and, for those who want to make their own music, a piano and plenty of other musical instruments.
OUTSIDE, the garden is enclosed and a safe place for young children. In addition to the open terrace is a covered BBQ area with a built-in barbecue, terracotta tiled floor and pallet sofa. It’s a perfect ‘inside outside’ space, popular smokers’ den (we don’t smoke in the house), and big enough to accommodate the garden table so you can eat outside even in wet weather. At the other end of the lawn, is a giant paddling pool/small portable swimming pool and, sitting above the garage/stables, a discrete space that doubles as an office and a games room, complete with professional-grade American pool table, amateur-grade table tennis table (MDF board that sits on the pool table!) and drum kit. Beyond the garden, dogs and older children can roam in our 10-acre paddock. The treehouse sleeps three!

Was Sie im Nachbarschafts-Viertel lieben werden
Oswaldkirk is a small, friendly village 20 miles north of York. Sitting on the boundary between the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the North York Moors National Park, it is surrounded by unspoiled countryside, spectacular landscape and popular attractions.
As well as drawing visitors in its own right, the local market town of Helmsley (4 miles) is the gateway to the North York Moors – over 500 square miles of national park. The moors are renowned for their walking and cycling and large parts of them can be explored by car (smaller parts by steam train).
The local area is well set up for sport and leisure activities. As well as walking and cycling, swimming (indoor and outdoor), tennis, squash, horse riding, shooting and golf are all available with 5 miles. If you’re after theme parks, you need to travel a little further – to Flamingo Land (15 mi) or Lightwater Valley (28 mi).
There are plenty of historic buildings and gardens to visit nearby, including Castle Howard (9 mi) and the ruined abbeys of Rievaulx and Byland (both 6 mi). Within the same range are the living abbeys of Ampleforth and Stanbrook (the largest communities of Benedictine monks and nuns in the UK). York is obviously famous for its history and buildings, but is also an excellent place for museums, shopping and eating out.
The quality of pub food (and pubs) in the villages around Oswaldkirk is very high and many of them cater well for families/children. Probably not for children, some of the best fine dining in the country is available at the nearby Black Swan at Oldstead and Hare at Scawton. The town of Malton, described as Yorkshire’s food capital, is 12 miles away.
For day trips, the sandy beaches of the Yorkshire coast and its pretty towns (Whitby, Staithes and Scarborough) can all be reached within an hour. If you want to compare moors, the Yorkshire Dales can be too.
