We've enjoyed living in our house for nearly over 20 years. Pollokshields is primarily a residential area located a couple of miles south of Glasgow city centre. Broadly split into Pollokshields East & Pollokshields West, the suburb covers an area of 2 square miles. The housing is a mix of traditional Tenements (low-rise apartment blocks that are 2 storeys high), then an extensive area dedicated to large sandstone Villas (generally converted into separate 'lower' & 'upper' apartments like our house, where we have the entire ground floor including the single-storey extensions to both sides, plus a large conservatory to the rear). All the Villas have substantial private gardens which have led to the areas ‘Garden suburb’ reputation. There are some more modern buildings from the 1960s / 1970s, though since the mid-1980s Pollokshields conservation area status has looked to restrict further new builds not in keeping with the architectural heritage.
The area is bordered by 4 parks (Queens, Maxwell, Pollok & Bellahouston) then culturally there is Scotland Street School museum to the North, the Tramway Theatre & Gallery to the East, House for an Art Lover to the West and the extensive Burrell Collection & Pollok House both located within Pollok Park to the South. The area is well served by different public transport options (bus, train & subway), though you're able to walk into Glasgow city centre, and it's further visitor attractions, in under 30 mins.
The area is very multi-cultural, particularly within some sections of the Tenement buildings, with a Muslim Mosque then Scotland’s largest Sikh Gurdwara Temple custom built for the community - both buildings are open to visitors, and are tourist attractions in their own right. The local food shopping reflects this diversity with a large choice of owner-managed businesses selling fresh vegetables, herbs & spices and butcher-meat. There also exist a number of European café’s and locally-owned Scottish-themed eating establishments, which we frequent on a regular basis.
Historically this area of Glasgow has been “dry”, though there do now exist a number of restaurants that sell alcohol (see above). For a regular bar / pub (and further choice of restaurants) you need to travel to either a neighbouring suburb such as Strathbungo or into Glasgow city centre.

Glasgow is an incredibly cosmopolitan city with a range of cultural activities, the UK's widest range of shopping outside London, and a great selection of cafes & restaurants. Our home is also walking distance to various neighbourhood restaurants
There are numerous outdoor activities within the city of Glasgow itself, with the mountains, ocean or in-land lochs within easy driving distance.
Scotland's capital Edinburgh can be reached in under an hour by train (which run every 15 mins until 11pm each night), and makes for a great day trip from Glasgow. There are also a number of popular tourist attractions / historical sites like Stirling Castle, Wallace Monument, etc close-by in central Scotland
Public transport options (bus, train or subway) are all close-by. Alternatively travel into Glasgow city centre by taxi / cab takes only 5 minutes
