We love making people feel welcome in our home, and being able to leave without a worry. I have done more than 15 exchanges and have never had a bad experience so far.
What country are you from?
The Netherlands
What were some of your biggest fears when hosting another member?
I was scared that the guests would not take proper care of my belongings and my pets, and the latter was my greatest fear.
How did you overcome this fear?
I had good communication beforehand, to make sure that my guests are the right people to exchange with. For us it is an absolute necessity. The fact that there is a tag ‘cat lover’ makes a search for the right match much easier.
Have you hosted members from different countries?
We have hosted members from Spain, France, Germany, UK and Belgium
Tell us about a memorable experience with a guest...
It is usually my mother who gets to meet the guests since we do simultaneous swaps. We did get to meet Hilde, Hans and their three children from Belgium who we exchanged with earlier this year. Such a lovely family. I still have regular contact with Hilde and hope to do another exchange with them in the future.
How do you prepare your home for your Guests?
I always send the house book beforehand via email. The printed version is always waiting in the living room with brochures of things to do and see in the area. I always ask what essential items my guests would like to see in the fridge upon arrival and what treats they like, so I can prepare a welcoming package. This always results in a package especially prepared for us too, often with a regional treat, home made cake or even a whole meal.
What did you realize after you hosted for the first time?
There is no reason to be scared. Since you stay in your exchange partner’s home, they will treat your house with respect too. Trust goes both ways. Communication is key.
