My HomeExchange Story: "If you want to travel on a budget, the single best thing you can do is to join HomeExchange. "
In 2021, Peter Showers and his partner embarked on their first HomeExchange adventure. Their destination: Portland, Oregon. Now, with over twenty exchanges under his belt, he recounted his experience in Portland with us, and even shared some tips for travelers who are new to home swapping as a way to travel.
What did you appreciate most about the home you stayed in?
The thing we appreciated most was how well maintained the home was. Beautiful floors, lovely furniture, and interesting artwork.
What did you appreciate most about your exchange partner?
This was our first exchange. We were hesitant to even do the exchange, but our exchange partner walked us through every step of the process. They were so nice and so helpful, and by the time we got back home we had begun to appreciate what a truly wonderful way to travel this is.
What did you see or do during your exchange?
We had been to Portland before, but we made a point of doing a lot of the touristy things that we had always avoided: We went to the zoo, walked along the waterfront and explored the Pittock Mansion.
What is one of your best memories or experiences from a home exchange?
My favorite memory from our first home exchange was exploring the Pittock Mansion, a beautiful home built on a hill above Portland with expansive views of the city at Mount Hood.
What would you say to your friends and family who are considering HomeExchange?
If you want to travel on a budget, the single best thing you can do is to join HomeExchange. Instead of spending your nights in cramped hotel rooms that cost hundreds of dollars per night, why not stay in someone's beautifully maintained home for absolutely nothing?
What tips and tricks would you give to new HomeExchangers?
When offering an exchange of your home to someone, actively sell them not just on your home, but on the area you live in. Tell them how comfortable your home is and point out all of the fun and interesting things they can do while in your city. This is especially helpful if you live somewhere that is not so well known.
